How much of your score is you?

The number above is not just your nervous system. Between the moment the page decides “green” and the moment it records your click, the signal passes through your screen and your mouse too. On average you wait half a frame before the new colour is even drawn, the monitor takes time to process and switch its pixels, and the mouse only reports clicks on its polling schedule.

Adjust the setup to see how the system’s share changes. The values are typical figures, not a measurement of your hardware.

Measured score ≈ 254 ms, of which 34 ms (13%) is hardware and software: half a frame 8.3 ms, display 10 ms, input 8 ms, browser ~8 ms.

What affects reaction time

  • Attention and alertness: tiredness, distraction and alcohol all slow simple reactions noticeably.
  • Warm-up: the first round is often the slowest. That’s why this test averages five.
  • Age: simple reaction time tends to lengthen gradually from early adulthood.
  • Setup: a higher refresh rate and a wired mouse shave real milliseconds, as the explainer shows. Check your screen’s actual rate on the refresh rate test.

Questions

What is a good reaction time?

For a simple visual test like this, many adults average somewhere around 200 to 300 ms. Scores under about 150 ms are rare and often come from anticipating the change. Your number includes the delay of your mouse, screen and browser, so compare results on the same setup.

Why is my reaction time slower on this computer than on my phone?

Every device adds its own lag: the screen’s refresh and processing time, the input device’s polling and the browser’s frame timing. A 60 Hz office monitor with a Bluetooth mouse can add 30 ms or more compared with a fast gaming setup. The explainer on this page breaks that down.

What happens if I click too early?

The round is marked as too soon and not counted. The wait before green is random, between 1.5 and 4.5 seconds, so guessing doesn’t help.

Are my results saved?
